WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University Athletics Department has announced the two recipients for the Bison of the Month award presented by Gallaudet Interpreting Services (GIS) for November. Women's swimmer Alexandra Polivanchuk (Orebro, Sweden) and football sophomore running back BJ Flores (Raymondville, Texas) were selected for their exceptional performances as Bison student-athletes.
Polivanchuk has been a consistent top finisher for the Bison in each meet that they’ve had this season. In the month of November she accumulated four first-place finishes, three second-place finishes and two third-place finishes as well as a first place as a part of the 200-yard medley relay team. The 2011-12 NEAC Women’s Swimmer of the Year has continued to improve as the season has progressed. In the Bison’s last meet against Bethany College, Polivanchuk helped lead the 200-yard medley relay team to a first-place finish with a time of 2:08.30 in addition to two more first-place finishes of her own in the 200-yard butterfly (2:31.42) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:27.61). She closed out the meet with a second-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley (2:29.09).
"Alex has been swimming well and getting ready to compete in the NEAC championships in February," said head coach Larry Curran. "As women's co-captain, she leads by example and always plays a key role in the team's performance."
Flores was instrumental in the Bison’s success through their historic 2013 season, especially in the month of November as he posted career highs in both rushing yards and carries. Throughout November, the two-time first-team All-Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) fullback accumulated 468 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns on 96 rushing attempts, averaging just under 5 yards per carry. He added one touchdown reception receiving out of the backfield. Flores’ career day came in the Bison’s first round NCAA championship playoff game against No. 7 Hobart College as he posted the most rushing yards (176), the most rushing attempts (38) and the longest rush (48 yards) of his career.
"We have relied heavily on BJ the past two years and he continues to deliver for us," said Gallaudet football coach Chuck Goldstein. "We can always count on him to run hard and keep his legs moving for those tough yards. Having a guy like BJ makes the whole team better and we are lucky to have him."
These are the third Bison of the Month awards for the 2013-14 athletics seasons. Each month the Gallaudet University Athletics Department will recognize two standout student-athletes (one male, one female) from their respective sports. Previous winners include football junior defensive lineman Tyler Snider (Thornville, Ohio) and soccer senior defender Katie Giles (Gaithersburg, Md.) for the month of October. Football senior defensive back Nicholas Elstad (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and women’s volleyball senior outside hitter Lane Peters (Phoenix, Ariz.) were the September Bison of the Month.
