WASHINGTON – Gallaudet University athletics is proud to participate in the third annual NCAA Division III Week (April 7-13) in an effort to celebrate the impact athletics and Bison student-athletes have on our campus and surrounding community. GU is joining nearly 450 Division III institutions and 43 conferences in this week’s celebration.
To help focus on the many student-athletes that represent Gallaudet athletics we will spotlight a different student-athlete each day this week. You will learn more about them as they express their feelings on what it is like to be a Division III student-athlete here at Gallaudet.
Junior Nico Santiago (Moorestown, N.J.) is a member of the Gallaudet football team and a two-time Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) All-Academic Team honoree. Santiago is a physical education major on track to graduate in May 2015.

What is it like to be a student-athlete in college?
NS: Being a student-athlete feels like a privilege that has to be earned through hard work on and off the field. I actually enjoy the challenge of maintaining a high grade point average (GPA) in school, while trying to stay in top form with football.
What is it like to be a student at Gallaudet
NS: Being a student at Gallaudet University is something most students around the country can't experience because we are so different here. I get to meet new students from all over the country. Some of these students have pushed me to my limit, when it comes to my schoolwork, and has forced me to go further with my studies.
You have been named to the ECFC All-Academic team the
past two years. How proud are you of that accomplishment and how
does an award like that drive you in your academic success in the
NS: It's an honor to be on a list of guys who excel in the classroom and on the field. My parents have always made sure I do my best in the classroom as well as on the field. I show my passion in my schoolwork and reap the benefit from it. There's nothing more I can ask for.
