WASHINGTON – Gallaudet University's Adham Talaat (Springfield, Va.) and Julia Wolff (Belleville, Ontario) had the unique opportunity to share their experiences of being a Bison student-athlete to U.S. Senate and House of Representatives staffers on Wednesday evening at the Dirksen Senate Building.
Talaat and Wolff were the presenters for Senator Tom Harkin's Deaf Community and Culture Series for this month. Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) introduced Talaat and Wolff, who shared what it is like to be a student-athlete at Gallaudet and answered insightful questions from the audience during the hour-long program.
"I'm very thankful for the opportunity to share my story and experiences in my lifetime, especially from my time at Gallaudet, at such a prestigious event," said Talaat. "It was an honor being a student-athlete ambassador for the University."
Wolff echoed Talaat's comments and she helped to teach members of the audience some basic American Sign Language at the end of the program.
"I was very honored to be able to stand up and discuss my story and have the people in the audience understand where we are coming from as deaf student-athletes and as people," said Wolff.
Assistant Athletic Director for Communications Sam Atkinson and several Talaat family members accompanied Talaat and Wolff to the event.
