WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University Athletics Department has announced the December Bison of the Month recipients presented by Gallaudet Interpreting Services(GIS). Junior Zamica Gage (Washington, D.C.), a guard on the women’s basketball team, and junior Trey Gordon (Talladega, Ala.), a forward for the men’s basketball team, was selected for their remarkable work as student-athletes on and off the court last month. This is Gordon's second straight month earning this recognition.
The women’s basketball team played two games in the Gallaudet University Holiday Tournament in December, winning both, including a 61-19 win over University of Valley Forge and beating Howard Community College, 70-60, in the championship game. The HCC game is considered an exhibition since it is a two-year college. Gage totaled a phenomenal 48 points in two games, grabbed 18 rebounds and had 12 steals.
“We are very pleased with Zamica’s commitment to our program,” said Gallaudet women’s basketball coach Stephanie Stevens. “With the help of her dominating presence on the court we are looking forward to our team's success this season.”
The men’s basketball team also played two games in the GU Holiday Tournament as it advanced to the championship game thanks to a 66-48 win over Maryland Bible College 66-48. The Bison lost 68-48 to Alfred University and closed out the month with a 75-71 win over Goucher College. before falling to Goucher College 68-48. Gordon tallied 62 points grabbed 19 rebounds, six steals and five assists in three games started. He made 22 of 43 (.511 percent) from the field and drained 12 three-pointers during the month of December.
“Trey is our toughest, hardest working player who took his game to a different level this year and deserves all of the recognition coming his way,” said Gallaudet men's basketball coach Brendan Stern. “It’s been a true privilege to watch him play.”
These are the fourth Bison of the Month awards for the 2014-15 athletic season. Each month the Gallaudet University Athletics Department will recognize two standout student-athletes (one male, one female) from their respective sports. Previous winners include the month of November; Gordon as well as women’s volleyball senior middle hitter Julia Wolff (Belleville, Ontario); October women’s soccer senior forward Sofia Lindevall (Stockholm, Sweden) and sophomore defensive lineman Devante Walters (Rockdale, Ga.); and September, women’s volleyball senior outside hitter Kali Frowick (Norfolk, Neb.) and sophomore men’s cross country runner Alex Close (Tallahassee Fla.).
