WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University Athletics Department announced the February Bison of the Month recipients presented by Gallaudet Interpreting Services (GIS). Junior Abdiel Davila-Cruz (Orlando, Fla.) and sophomore Thyra Wood (Great Falls, Mont.) of the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were selected for their stunning performances as student-athletes last month. This is both Wood and Davila-Cruz’s first time winning Bison of the Month.
Gallaudet participated in all three days of the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Swimming & Diving Championships on Feb. 13-15 in Cobleskill, N.Y., hosted by SUNY Cobleskill. The Bison men's team finished fourth overall while the women's team was fifth.
Wood set her personal record (PR) in three events at the NEAC championship meet. She set new times in the 50-yard freestyle (28.20), 100 freestyle (1.02.00) and dropped an amazing seven seconds from her 100 backstroke time (1:11.84).
"Thyra has a lot of natural talent in the pool and she had the courage to adjust her swimming technique for the championship meet," said Gallaudet coach Larry Curran. "She raced hard, placed well and significantly lowered her PRs."
Cruz dropped 10 seconds off his PR in the grueling 400 individual medley (IM) which combines all four competitive strokes as he finished in third place (5:10.19). He also set a PR in the 100 backstroke (1:04.62) and the 200 butterfly (2:32.20) as well as contributed on several relay swims. Davila-Cruz earned third team All-NEAC honors for the 400 IM and the 400 medley relay.
"Abdiel, as men's team captain, provided critical leadership for this young team. He committed his training effort to best performance swims during the NEAC championship and raced to several new PRs," said Curran.
These are the sixth Bison of the Month awards for the 2014-15 athletic season. Each month the Gallaudet University Athletics Department will recognize two standout student-athletes (one male, one female) from their respective sports.
