Raymond Nelson and Lane Peters named January Bison of the Month presented by GIS

WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University Athletics Department has announced the January Bison of the Month recipients presented by Gallaudet Interpreting Services (GIS). Senior Lane Peters (Phoenix, Ariz.), a forward on the women’s basketball team, and sophomore Raymond Nelson (Riverside, Calif.), a guard for the men’s basketball team, was selected for their astounding work as student-athletes on and off the court last month. This is both Peters and Nelson’s first time winning Bison of the Month in the 2014-15 academic year.

The women’s basketball team played 11 games in the month of January where Peters recorded four double-doubles, accumulated 119 rebounds (54 offense, 65 defense) including a season-high 19 against Penn College. Peters scored 83 points last month, and recorded her season-high 15 points against Cazenovia College.

"Lane has shown a fearless attitude on the court this season," said Gallaudet women's basketball coach Stephanie Stevens. "Her positivity and support for her teammates has given us great team chemistry and success."

The men’s basketball team played nine games in January. Nelson, in his first year as a Bison, has played exceptionally well. The guard has totaled 116 points, shooting at 53 percent from the field and 65 percent from the free throw line. Playing both sides of the court, Nelson has also recorded 24 assists, 22 rebounds, 12 steals and four blocks in January. He has been a significant part of the team, helping lead the Bison on an eight-game winning streak, a feat that has not happened since the 1916-17 season.

"I'm very proud of Raymond who has grown so much over the past month. He has God-given talent that cannot be taught, but what has set him apart lately is his commitment to becoming a great teammate and doing whatever is necessary to win basketball games," said Gallaudet men's basketball coach Brendan Stern. "I often tell him that the only person who can stop Raymond is Raymond. If he continues to work hard and attack the basket, take care of the ball, and defend, then the sky is the limit for him."

These are the fifth Bison of the Month awards for the 2014-15 athletic season. Each month the Gallaudet University Athletics Department will recognize two standout student-athletes (one male, one female) from their respective sports. Previous winners include the month of December; women’s basketball junior guard Zamica Gage (Washington, D.C.) and men’s basketball junior forward Trey Gordon (Talladega, Ala.), November; Gordon as well as women’s volleyball senior middle hitter Julia Wolff (Belleville, Ontario); October women’s soccer senior forward Sofia Lindevall (Stockholm, Sweden) and sophomore defensive lineman Devante Walters (Rockdale, Ga.); and September, women’s volleyball senior outside hitter Kali Frowick (Norfolk, Neb.) and sophomore men’s cross country runner Alex Close (Tallahassee Fla.).
