WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University Athletics Department announced the March Bison of the Month recipients presented by Gallaudet Interpreting Services (GIS). Sophomore first baseman Justin Strong (Charlotte, N.C.) from baseball and senior center fielder Elena Ciccarelli (Whitesboro, N.Y.) from softball. This is both Strong and Ciccarelli’s first time winning Bison of the Month for the 2014-15 academic year.
Strong is starting the season off strong, leading the team with a .357 batting average. In March, Strong had 18 hits in 51 at bats, with a double and two RBI. Strong has also been a force in the field with 127 putouts at first base in 18 games in March.
“It is nice to see Justin developing into a solid consistent hitter for us,” said Gallaudet baseball coach Curtis Pride. “He is going to continue to get better as he gains more experience. Justin is such a great pleasure to coach and he always wants to get better everyday.”
Ciccarelli led the softball team with a .375 batting average with 15 hits, including two doubles, one triple and seven RBI in 40 at bats in March. She also ranked third on the team in fielding percentage (.926) with only two errors in 20 games played in the month of March.
“Elena is much more relaxed this year than her last three years and she is demonstrating a great leader on the field,” said Gallaudet softball coach Joseph Kolcun. “She is giving it her all as she knows it's her last semester. I’m proud of her and proud to be her coach to witness her accomplishments thus far.”
These are the seventh Bison of the Month awards for the 2014-15 athletic season. Each month the Gallaudet University Athletics Department will recognize two standout student-athletes (one male, one female) from their respective sports. Previous winners include the month of February; from the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams, junior Abdiel Davila-Cruz (Orlando, Fla.) and sophomore Thyra Wood (Great Falls, Mont.); January; women’s basketball senior forward Lane Peters (Phoenix, Ariz.) and sophomore guard for the men’s basketball team Raymond Nelson (Riverside, Calif.); December; women’s basketball junior guard Zamica Gage (Washington, D.C.) and men’s basketball junior forward Trey Gordon (Talladega, Ala.), November; Gordon as well as women’s volleyball senior middle hitter Julia Wolff (Belleville, Ontario); October women’s soccer senior forward Sofia Lindevall (Stockholm, Sweden) and sophomore defensive lineman Devante Walters (Rockdale, Ga.); and September, women’s volleyball senior outside hitter Kali Frowick (Norfolk, Neb.) and sophomore men’s cross country runner Alex Close (Tallahassee Fla.).
