Sofia Lindevall and Devante Walters named October Bison of the Month presented by GIS

WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University Athletics Department announced the two recipients for the Bison of the Month award presented by Gallaudet Interpreting Services (GIS) for October. Women's soccer senior forward Sofia Lindevall (Stockholm, Sweden) and sophomore defensive lineman Devante Walters (Rockdale, Ga.) were selected for their extraordinary performances on and off the field.

Despite only playing four of the last seven games of the season, Lindevall made her presence felt on the soccer field. She was a force as a forward and midfielder pushing the tempo for the Bison all year. Lindevall made her offensive presence known in the week 16th against the College of St. Elizabeth as she scored three straight goals in a span that lasted two minutes, nine seconds. Adding another goal against Wilson College bringing her totals to five goals and three assists.

"Sofia Lindevall is a player who shows up to every game and practice giving her 110%, establishing a high level for other players to follow,” said Gallaudet women’s soccer coach Liza Offreda. “Sofia will be greatly missed as we continue to grow as a team.”

Through the month of October, Walters has been one of the leaders on a Bison defense unit that ranked 16th in total defense in Division III. Walters compiled 27 tackles (18 solo), 10 tackles for a loss (six sacks) for a total of 32 yards and one blocked kick for the month.

“Devante has been great for us on defense this year,” said Gallaudet football coach Chuck Goldstein. “He has shown great character filling in this year and playing at a high level. He has developed into a great player for us and we count on him to make plays.”

These are the second Bison of the Month awards for the 2014-15 athletic seasons. Each month the Gallaudet University Athletics Department will recognize two standout student-athletes (one male, one female) from their respective sports. Previous winners include women's volleyball senior outside hitter Kali Frowick (Norfolk, Neb.) and sophomore men’s cross country runner Alex Close (Tallahassee, Fla.) for the month of September.
