WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University Athletics Department announced the two recipients for the Bison of the Month award presented by Gallaudet Interpreting Services (GIS) for September. Women's volleyball senior outside hitter Kali Frowick (Norfolk, Neb.) and sophomore men’s cross country runner Alex Close (Tallahassee, Fla.) were selected for their phenomenal performances as Bison student-athletes.
Frowick had an amazing performance the last week of September, alone, where she racked up 95 kills in her five matches, giving her a .319 hitting percentage as well as 65 digs and registering a double double for each match played. This Bison women’s volleyball team hosted the eighth annual Worthington Classic and Frowick’s performance earned her North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Women's Volleyball Player of the Week award for the seventh time in her career.
Frowick has been a leader on the court all season helping to lead the Bison to an undefeated conference record (4-0) and overall 9-10 record. Frowick has started in all 19 matches this season and leads the board in kills (260 with .306 hitting percentage) and digs (233). She has also added 15 service aces and 20 blocks to her impressive stat sheet.
“My congratulations to Kali on her award for hard work and performance with her high tolerance of pain,” said Gallaudet women’s volleyball coach Lynn Ray Boren. “She has been giving a great display of top player in our region. She is fun to watch with her athletic ability.”
Close returned for his second season running with the men’s cross country team after a season-ending injury last season. Close has finished two meets in September since his return to the team and has finished in the top 10 in both 8K races. In September, Gallaudet University held its first annual Bison Invitational in 23 years where Close finished fifth overall with a time of 29 minutes, 18 seconds. In his second race, Close finished in eighth place crossing the finish line at 29 minutes, 25 seconds.
“I always tell my student-athletes to give me their best and that’s what Alex does everyday,” said cross country coach Byron Moore. “Alex has stepped up as team captain and become a true leader on-and-off the course. I couldn’t be more proud of his performance.”
This is the second time both athletes have been awarded Bison of the Month. Frowick earned hers for November 2011 and Close in October 2012, both during their freshmen seasons.
