Shysh and Gordon named December Bison of the Month presented by GIS

WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University Athletics Department has announced the December Bison of the Month recipients presented by Gallaudet Interpreting Services (GIS). Sophomore guard Sabina Shysh (Tucson, Ariz.) of the women's basketball team and senior guard Trey Gordon (Talladega, Ala.) of the men's basketball team were selected for their impressive displays in the month of December.

Shysh tallied 62 points in five games in December as the Bison posted a 2-3 record for the month. She netted a career-high 20 points in a 77-49 win over Randolph College on Dec. 8. She made 7 of 13 shots from the field (53.8 percent) and drained three 3-pointers to go with five rebounds, five assists. She had 10 assists in the month including the season best total of five against the WildCats. Shysh averaged 6.0 rebounds per game as she grabbed 30 in five games including a career best nine against Penn College on Dec. 6.

"Sabina definitely deserves this recognition," said Gallaudet women's basketball coach Stephanie Stevens. "She has taken on a daily role of leadership on and off the court, in the front lines and behind the scenes. No one is more deserving of this award than Sabina."

Gordon led the Bison to a 3-1 record in December as he started all four games and tallied 73 points, 20 rebounds, 18 3-pointers, seven steals and six assists. Gordon averaged 18.2 points per game and made 4.5 3-pointers per game. The senior shot 52.3 percent from the field (23 of 44). He scored a season best 20 points in a 68-60 win over Eastern Mennonite University on Dec. 8.

"Trey is an outstanding student-athlete plain and simple," said Gallaudet men's basketball coach Kevin Kovacs. "He is a true model of what every student-athlete should be like. He has all the attributes a student-athlete should have to be successful; he is a hard worker, great listener, wonderful student in the classroom and respectful to everyone on the team and outside of the team. We are very fortunate to have a student-athlete of his caliber, which does not always come around."

These are the fourth Bison of the Month awards for the 2015-16 athletic seasons. Each month the Gallaudet University Athletics Department will recognize two standout student-athletes (one male, one female) from their respective sports. Previous winners include the month of September; freshman cross country runner Otto Kingstedt (Stockholm, Sweden) and women's volleyball senior setter TraciAnn Hoglind (Fishers, Ind.); October: Kingstedt and women's soccer sophomore Anastasia Murray(Raleigh, N.C.); November: Kingstedt and women's swimming senior Anna Polivanchuk (Orebro, Sweden).
