WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University Athletics Department has announced the January Bison of the Month recipients presented by Gallaudet Interpreting Services (GIS). Senior forward Danielle Morris (St. Louis, Mich.) of the women's basketball team and junior center Joshua McGriff (Somerset, N.J.) of the men's basketball team were selected for their fantastic displays in the month of January.
The Bison women’s basketball team won eight of the 10 games played in January with Morris leading the team with 95 rebounds (averaging 9.5 per game) as well as scoring 53 points, 12 blocks, nine steals and six assists. Morris led the team in rebounds for seven games (one tie) and pulled down double-digits in five games. In the first game against Penn St.-Abington on Jan. 5, Morris pulled down 15 rebounds, her second highest this season. She also recorded her only double-double this season with 10 points and 11 rebounds against Penn College on Jan. 9.
McGriff led the Bison with points (145), rebounds (92) and blocks (25) in the nine games in January. He tallied six double-doubles, recording his season-high 23 points against Wilson College on Jan. 20, and grabbed a season best 14 rebounds against Penn St.-Abington and Penn St.-Berks.
"Josh has worked hard and made great strides in his all around game," said Gallaudet men's basketball coach Kevin Kovacs. "We are thrilled for him and we are very aware that he still has room to get better which makes it all more exciting!"
These are the fifth Bison of the Month awards for the 2015-16 athletic seasons. Each month the Gallaudet University Athletics Department will recognize two standout student-athletes (one male, one female) from their respective sports. Previous winners include the month of September; freshman cross country runner Otto Kingstedt (Stockholm, Sweden) and women's volleyball senior setter TraciAnn Hoglind (Fishers, Ind.); October: Kingstedt and women's soccer sophomore Anastasia Murray(Raleigh, N.C.); November: Kingstedt and women's swimming senior Anna Polivanchuk (Orebro, Sweden); December: senior men’s basketball guard Trey Gordon (Talladega, Ala.) and sophomore women’s basketball guard Sabina Shysh (Tucson, Ariz.)
