WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University Athletics Department has announced the September Bison of the Month recipients presented by Gallaudet Interpreting Services (GIS). Senior setter TraciAnn Hoglind (Fishers, Ind.) and freshman runner Otto Kingstedt (Stockholm, Sweden) were selected for their outstanding performances on and off the court.
The Bison volleyball team had 12 matches in the month of September, went 9-3, and won their first three North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) matches. Hoglind totaled 419 assists, 78 digs, 15 service aces, 10 digs and three kills in 40 sets. She had 90.9 percentage of all assists in September and led the NEAC in assists per set with 10.54.
The men’s cross country team competed in three races during September and Kingstedt was the first Bison finisher to cross the line each time. He was a second-place finisher at Salisbury University with a time of 26:08.98, and finished in first place at both Penn St.-Abington and Lancaster Bible College. Kingstedt set a new course record at Abington with a time of 27:28.3 and led the Bison team to a first-place finish at Lancaster Bible with his time of 27:39.3. He also earned three NEAC Men’s Cross Country Runner of the week awards for September.
"I feel Otto is very deserving of this honor. He is a good example of what it means to be a student-athlete by doing what it takes in the classroom as well as on the course. He trains hard during practice in the mornings then will often put in extra work in the evenings as well,” said head coach Byron Moore. “Otto is helping to raise the level of our men’s program in it entirety, and it shows every meet when I see everyone's time drop. The goal of weekly team improvement is pushing the us closer to our goal to win the Conference Championship."
These are the first Bison of the Month awards for the 2015-16 athletic seasons. Each month the Gallaudet University Athletics Department will recognize two standout student-athletes (one male, one female) from their respective sports.
