Barlow and Hayes selected as April Bison of the Month presented by GIS

WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University Athletics Department has announced the April Bison of the Month recipients presented by Gallaudet Interpreting Services (GIS). Juniors Alyssa Barlow (Chandler, Ariz.) of the softball team and Dylan Hayes (Endicott, N.Y.) of the baseball team were selected for their standout performances during the month of April.

Barlow led the softball team with an impressive .609 batting average in 20 games in April. She went 39-for-64 at the plate including seven doubles, three triples, 15 RBI and 18 runs for the Bison. She also boasted a .960 fielding percentage from first base and the pitchers circle with a team-high 75 putouts, 20 assists and only four errors. Barlow had at least one hit in 18 of 20 games in April and had two or more hits in 12 of those games. Her best game came on April 29 against St. Elizabeth when she went 4-for-5 from the plate and registered five RBI to lead the Bison past the Eagles, 12-10.

In addition to leading the Bison's offense Barlow started eight games in the circle where she picked up three wins. She appeared in four more games and registered two saves. In the month of April, Barlow had an ERA of 5.32 as she gave up 71 hits, 56 runs (40 earned) and struck out 29 batters in the 52.2 innings she pitched.

"Alyssa definitely deserves this recognition," said Gallaudet softball coach Justen Burns. "She has been working incredibly hard since NEAC competition began and her influence on the team, determination to achieve her goals have led us to some great wins in our conference."

Hayes led the baseball team with batting average of .375 in the 19 games he played in April. He went 24-for-64 from the plate and racked up 13 runs, two doubles, one triple and nine RBI. Hayes' standout performance came on April 15 when hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning against Lancaster Bible College to score the game-winning run. In the field, Hayes registered a .920 fielding percentage with a team-high 93 putouts, 10 assists and nine errors. Hayes also took the mound five times and pitched 17.2 innings allowing 29 hits, 25 runs (22 earned), and posted five strikeouts.

"Dylan has come a long way from last year. His performance this season has met my expectations, filling in nicely at various positions when we had some key injuries," said Gallaudet baseball coach Curtis Pride. "Dylan seemed to be more motivated this year to do well and help the team anyway he could. I was happy to see that he finished the season strong. He deserved to be named Bison of the Month for April."
