WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University Athletics Department has announced the November Bison of the Month recipients presented by Gallaudet Interpreting Services (GIS). Freshman Julia Miller-Notestone (Medford, Ore.) of the women's swimming and diving team and freshman Chris Martinez (El Paso, Texas) of the men's swimming and diving team were selected for their exceptional performances throughout the month of November.
The women's swimming and diving team competed against six teams in four meets during the month of November posting an overall 2-4 record. Miller-Notestone opened the month against Marymount (Va.) University with a first, second and third-place finish. She picked up a second-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (1:09.61) and a third-place finish in the 200 individual medley (IM) (2:33.32) before joining members of her team to take first place in the 400 freestyle relay (4:36.06). Later in the month, Miller-Notestone led the Bison to their first two wins as she took first place in two individual events and one relay event on Saturday, Nov. 12, when they topped Hollins (98-94) and Ferrum (98-80) in Roanoke, Va., in a double-dual meet. Miller was first to touch the wall in the 200 freestyle (2:14.21) and the 100 backstroke (1:08.26). She also helped her relay team earn a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay (2:14.90).
The men's swimming and diving team competed in three meets against four teams during the month of November going 2-2 and picking up their first conference win of the season against Cazenovia College on November 19. Martinez put on a spectacle in the pool during the month, earning eight first-place finishes in 11 races. In addition, he set three new school records, two of which were set in less than 24-hours apart. On Friday, Nov. 4, he was first to touch the wall in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.83) and on Saturday, Nov. 5, he was first to touch the wall in the 200 breaststroke (2:22.47). Martinez's fifth school record came on Saturday, Nov. 19, when he took first place in the 100 IM with a time of 1:01.33.
These are the third Bison of the Month awards for the 2016-17 athletic seasons. Each month Gallaudet University Athletics Department will recognize two standout student-athletes (one male, one female) from their respective sports.
