GANSEVOORT, N.Y. – Gallaudet University placed 40 student-athletes on the 2016-17 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Scholar-Athlete list as announced by the conference. Each student-athlete was required to accumulate a 3.4 or higher grade point average for the fall and spring semesters combined.

Gallaudet finished 10th overall among NEAC institutions and six associate members. Keuka College was first with 85 honorees followed by Cazenovia College and Lancaster Bible College tied for second with 81. Wells College (78) and Penn St.-Berks (73) round out the Top 5.

The NEAC honored a record 806 student-athletes this year from 20 different institutions who represent 32 different states, Puerto Rico and 14 different countries. GU, who completed its seventh year in the NEAC, had honorees hail from 19 different states and four countries. The conference total improved by 19 student-athletes from a year ago.

Three Gallaudet student-athletes earned NEAC Scholar-Athlete honors all four years including Conrad Baer (Fremont, Calif.), Ian Evans (Murphy, N.C.) and Adele Fass (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Since Gallaudet joined the NEAC there have only been 11 Bison to earn NEAC Scholar-Athlete honors all four years.

GU had nine repeat honorees from last year's NEAC Scholar-Athlete listing and four others earned NEAC Scholar-Athlete honors for a third time.

Gallaudet’s women’s sports had 23 honorees compared to 17 honorees from men’s sports. There was one woman that played more than one sport. GU sponsors six women’s sports and five men’s sports that compete in the NEAC.

Women's swimming led the way on the women's side with six honorees followed by softball (4), women's basketball (4), women's cross country (4), women's soccer (3) and women's volleyball (3). Men's basketball led the way on the men's side with six honorees followed by men's soccer (4), men's cross country (3), men's swimming (3) and baseball (1).

Out of the 140 Gallaudet student-athletes to compete in NEAC competition during the 2016-17 school year, 72 of them had a GPA of 3.0 or higher (51.4 percent) and 28.5 percent had a GPA of 3.4 or higher. Gallaudet’s record for NEAC Scholar-Athletes in a season is 61, set in 2014-15.

In addition to the NEAC Scholar-Athlete list the Bison had four student-athletes named to the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) all-academic team back in February. Those honorees had to post a GPA of 3.3 or higher. Gallaudet’s grand total of student-athletes who earned all-academic conference honors this season is 44.
