Mustangs gallop by Bison, 16-5
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Stevenson University came out of the gates swinging against Gallaudet University on Thursday afternoon as the Bison gave up another big inning to start a game. The Mustangs plated eight runs before Gallaudet came to bat in the Capital Athletic Conference contest. GU battled back to plate five runs but in the end lost 16-5 in nine innings.
Freshman pitcher Tommy Barksdale (Brookeville, Md.) was rocked for seven runs off four hits and three walks as he was pulled after his eighth batter faced with one out in the top of the first inning. Fellow freshman Peter Leccese (North Bellmore, N.Y.) followed and was able to get Gallaudet (0-7, 0-6 CAC) through the fifth inning.
GU scored one run in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the Mustang lead to 11, 12-1. The Bison then scored twice in the sixth and eighth innings but so did Stevenson (9-2, 4-2 CAC).
The Kuschmider brothers of Kyle (2-for-4) and Chester (2-for-4) from Olathe, Kan., led the team with two hits apiece, both had a double. Sophomore shortstop Jeremy Shepps (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) collected his first double of the season and scored a run.
Stevenson was paced offensively by second baseman Cody Schuchman (3-for-3) who hit two doubles, scored one run and had four RBIs while catcher Matthew Bratter knocked in three runs and scored twice. Randy Bond (1-0) picked up the win as he allowed one run on three hits, walked one and struck out three Bison in five innings of work.
Gallaudet will complete the three-game series with Stevenson tomorrow (Friday, March 12) on the road in a doubleheader that begins at 2 p.m., weather permitting.
