GANSEVOORT, N.Y. - The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) announced its weekly conference student-athlete of the week awards and Gallaudet University senior Zane Noschese (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was named the baseball recipient for the week of April 11.
Noschese becomes the first spring GU student-athlete to receive a baseball or softball award by the NEAC this year. Gallaudet has earned 20 NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week awards for the 2010-11 season, its first in the conference. The NEAC doesn't sponsor track and field as a sport.
The senior outfielder/pitcher led the Bison with a .571 batting average as he went 4-for-7 at the plate in four games last week as Gallaudet posted a 3-1 record against NEAC foes Cazenovia College and Keuka College. In the first game against Cazenovia, Noschese went 2-for-3, walked once and scored two runs in an 11-3 loss. He helped the Bison bounce back in the second game against the Wildcats as he went 1-for-3 at the plate, scored a run and walked once as GU came from behind to win 4-3 in seven innings. Noschese pitched the complete game for the Buff and Blue where he allowed three runs (one earned) on seven hits, walked two and struck out one Wildcat. He improved his season record to 5-0 and dropped his earned run average to 2.09. On Sunday against Keuka, Noschese saw some time at second base where he picked up a hit in the first game and a RBI in the second game.
For the season, Noschese is third on the team with a .342 batting average (26-for-76) and is second with 25 runs scored. He is Gallaudet's top pitcher with a 5-0 record, 2.09 ERA, four complete games and has logged 38.2 innings.
Gallaudet's next game is on the road Wednesday (April 13) afternoon against conference rival Pennsylvania State University-Harrisburg with the first game slated to begin at 3 p.m.
