Seven-run 8th inning not enough for the Bison against Frostburg State
WASHINGTON, D.C. – A sluggish start to Tuesday's home baseball game with non-conference foe Frostburg State University placed Gallaudet University in a tough hole that the Bison had to dig out of. The first 10 batters for Frostburg to step to the plate at Hoy Field reached base and would subsequently score as the Bobcats (10-7) jumped out to an 11-0 lead after the first half inning of play. The Frostburg lead grew to 13-0 before the Bison scored seven runs in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Bobcats won 13-7.
Gallaudet (7-12) has now dropped eight straight after starting the season 7-4. Five different Bison batters had a hit in the game including senior Zane Noschese (Pittsburgh, Pa.), freshman outfielder William Bissell (Brewer, Maine), freshman catcher Casey Hicks (Henderson, Nev.), sophomore outfielder Yuri Johnston (Greensboro, N.C.) and junior Ryan Hastings (Cherry Valley, Mass.). Johnston came through with two hits to pace the Buff and Blue. Freshman pitcher Tyler Crace (Westfield, Ind.) suffered the loss as he only faced the first eight Bobcat batters before he was pulled.
The Bison scored seven runs off Frostburg reliever Kevin Williford as he walked three batters, hit one and allowed two hits. He didn't record an out as he faced seven batters. A RBI single by Johnston ended Williford's day.
The three-hour game saw a combined 20 runs and 20 hits occur. This game was added and finalized a week ago as the two teams were not slated to face each other when the 2011 schedule was announced.
Gallaudet will hit the road this weekend and face former Capital Athletic Conference opponent Salisbury University on Saturday, March 26, for a doubleheader that begins at 1 p.m.
