CAZENOVIA, N.Y. – The Gallaudet University baseball team picked up two much-needed North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) games on Saturday to begin a two-day road trip in New York. The Bison defeated Cazenovia College 3-2 and 6-2 to improve their record to 16-15 overall and 4-4 in the NEAC West Division.
Gallaudet received two strong pitching performance as sophomore Marcus Smith (Baltimore, Md.) and freshman Brandon Holsworth (Beal City, Mich.) who pitched back-to-back solid games. Smith (5-3) pitched 6.1 innings and allowed two runs on 11 hits, three walks and three strikeouts in the first game. Sophomore Tyler Crace (Westfield, Ind.) picked up his first save with two pitches as Cazenovia hit into a double play. Holsworth (4-4) followed with a complete game as he allowed two runs on six hits, four walks and four strikeouts.
Sophomore All-American outfielder William Bissell (Brewer, Maine) slammed his fourth home run of the season in the first game. Bissell led off the second inning with a solo homer. He finished with two runs scored and one RBI in the win. Cazenovia took a brief 2-1 lead into the fourth inning before the Bison scored twice to take a 3-2 lead.
In the second game, GU scored a run in each of the first two innings and then scored a run in the fifth, sixth and two runs in the seventh to close out the 6-2 win over Cazenovia (10-18, 1-5 NEAC West). Junior Tommy Barksdale (Brookeville, Md.) led the offense with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with two doubles, two runs and a RBI.
Gallaudet will aim to tie and possibly break the school record of 17 wins in a season set last year with two more games on Sunday, April 15, against Keuka College on the road.
