GANSEVOORT, N.Y. – The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) announced its student-athlete of the week awards for March 4 and Gallaudet University sophomore Brandon Holsworth (Beal City, Mich.) was chosen as the NEAC Baseball Pitching Student-Athlete of the Week and senior shortstop Tommy Barksdale (Brookeville, Md.) was selected as the NEAC Baseball Student-Athlete of the Week.
This marks the first time the NEAC Baseball Student-Athlete of the Week awards were given for the 2013 season. This weeks nominations included the first two weeks of the season's statistics.
Holsworth went 1-0 with a no decision in a pair of starts, giving up four runs (one earned) on 10 hits while striking out six in 12.2 innings for a 0.71 ERA. In his first start of the season, the sophomore gave up one earned run and four runs total while striking out three to record a no decision in a 5-4 loss to the Wesley College Wolverines on Sunday, Feb. 24. A week later, Holsworth tossed a complete game shutout in a 6-0 win over Mary Washington, giving up three hits while striking out three batters to snap a 0-55 series record and give the Bison their first victory over the Eagles in program history. This is Holsworth's second weekly award from the NEAC as he was honored as the pitcher of the week last season on April 16.
In the team's eight games played thus far, Barksdale batted .524 (11-for-21) with 11 runs scored, eight RBI, a double, a triple, a homerun, 12 walks drawn and 17 total bases while registering a slugging percentage of .810 and an on-base percentage of .697. Barksdale opened the season with a five-game hitting streak while also scoring a run in seven straight contests. He scored at least two runs in three different games and collected at least two hits in four games, which included going 3-for-4 in a 6-0 victory over Mary Washington on Sunday that gave the Bison their first victory over the Eagles in program history. His home run came in a 5-3 victory over Valley Forge Christian College Saturday, where he finished 2-for-2 with two walks drawn and two runs scored. Barksdale is a two-time All-NEAC second team honoree.
GU is slated to host McDaniel College, weather permitting, on Thursday, March 7, at 2 p.m. at Hoy Field.
