WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University baseball team swept SUNYIT on Saturday 15-2 and 3-0 in a key North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader at Hoy Field. The Bison swept the regular-season twin bill with the Wildcats for the first time in the past three years.
Gallaudet (14-16, 6-2 NEAC) outscored SUNYIT (8-12, 2-4 NEAC) by 16 runs, 18-2, over the course of the two games. The 15 runs scored in the first game are the most for GU since a 17-3 victory over Westfield St. on March 18.
The Bison broke open the first game with a seven-run fifth inning as GU led 15-1 over the Wildcats. Senior shortstop Tommy Barksdale (Brookeville, Md.) got things started with a three-run triple to center field. Freshman Ryan Rippy (Tullahoma, Tenn.) later singled home two additional runs as the Bison scored seven times on five hits.
Barksdale finished game 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored and three runs knocked in. Junior catcher Casey Hicks (Henderson, Nev.) went 2-for-3, triple, scored twice and drove in four runs.
Junior Chris Guinn (McLoud, Okla.) picked up the win on the mound as he went six strong innings where he allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits, walked three and struck out three Wildcats. Junior Orion Palmer (Riverside, Calif.) pitched a scoreless seventh inning.
SUNYIT was limited to two runs (one in the fourth and sixth innings) and only had four hits against Guinn. Joseph Szepessy (1-3) suffered the loss for the Wildcats as he lasted into the fourth inning where he allowed eight runs (seven earned) on five hits, walked seven and recorded three strikeouts.
Sophomore pitcher Brandon Holsworth (Beal City, Mich.) went the distance in the second game as he recorded his fourth complete game of the season. Holsworth (3-4) tallied his second shutout as he surrendered five hits, walked one and struck out four batters. His counterpart, Jeff Albright (1-4), went the distance but allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits, three walks and three strikeouts.
GU scored a run in the bottom of the first inning and later increased its margin when Barksdale slammed his team-leading third home run of the season over the left center field fence in the third inning as the Bison led 2-0.
Hicks doubled home freshman Chase Magsig (Hudsonville, Mich.) in the fifth inning as the Gallaudet margin increased to three.
Gallaudet next hosts nationally-ranked Shenandoah University (21-9), No. 25 in the latest D3baseball.com poll, on Monday, April 15, at 3:30 p.m.
