Bison sweep Westfield State in doubleheader in Florida

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Gallaudet baseball team swept Westfield State University in a doubleheader here Monday, winning the first game 17-3 and the second game 5-4 at the RussMatt Invitational.

Gallaudet (6-10) was leading the Owls 4-0 in entering the fourth inning of the first game when the Bison had an explosive seven-run fourth inning. The Bison's first seven batters all reached base safely. Junior third baseman Chris Guinn (McLoud, Okla.) started the inning off by getting hit by a pitch to take first base then advance to second on a wild pitch. Senior first baseman Jeremy Adams (Glenn Dale, Md.) reached first on a fielding error and Guinn advanced to third. Freshman designated hitter Peter LoDuca (Union City, Calif.) singled to right center to score Guinn, advance Adams to second. Freshman right fielder Ryan Rippy (Tullahoma, Tenn.) singled on a bunt to the pitcher advancing LoDuca to second and Adams to third. Junior second baseman JJ Klein (Cincinnati, Ohio) reached first on a fielder's choice, advancing Rippy to second and LoDuca to third. Adams scored on a throwing error to home plate by third baseman Jeremy Tanguary. After a balk by pitcher Mike Molta all three base runners advanced, with LoDuca scoring. The first out of the inning when freshman Chase Magsig (Hudsonville, Mich.) hit a two-run single down the left field line but was out at second base on the throw from left fielder Pat McWilliams to Tanguay to second baseman Kyle Colesanti to clear the bases. Senior shortstop Tommy Barksdale (Brookeville, Md.) singled up the middle, causing the Owls to bring in Mike Sullivan as the new pitcher. With William Bissell (Brewer, Maine) batting Barksdale stole second and advanced to third on Bissell's fly out to center field for the second out of the inning. Junior catcher Casey Hicks (Henderson, Nev.) doubled to right center to score Barksdale then scored himself when Guinn singled up the middle. The third out of the inning came when Adams struck out swinging.

Klein went 3-for-5 at the plate with three runs scored and three RBIs with a double. Magsig went 3-for-5 with two runs score and four RBIs with a double and a stolen base. All Bison hitters got on base at least once safely. Sophomore Brandon Holsworth (2-1) pitched six scoreless innings as he allowed three hits, walked one and struck out six.

The Bison and Owls (3-6) had a back-and-fourth second game with the Bison taking the lead first in the second inning. Hicks was hit by a pitch, followed by a Guinn single to right field, that advanced Hicks to third base. Adams singled to third base and scored Hicks for the first run of the game. The Owls answered with two runs of their own in the third inning to make the score 2-1 in their favor before Gallaudet scored another run in the third inning on a Hicks single down the right field line that moved Bissel to third and scored Barksdale to tie the game at 2-2.

GU added on three more runs in the fifth inning bring the score to 5-2. Westfield, located in Mass., tried to rally in the sixth inning but only came up with two runs.

Barksdale went 1-for-2 with a double, a walk, two runs scored and two RBIs. Rippy (2-2) earned the win on the mound for the Bison pitching 5.1 innings giving up four earned runs on four hits, four walks and five strikeouts. Adams closed out the game at pitcher for Gallaudet earning his second save of the season after pitching 1.1 innings, giving up one hit and one walk with a strikeout.

Gallaudet will play Rowan University at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20, in Winter Haven, Fla., at Chain of the Lake Park Stadium in one nine-inning game.
