BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Gallaudet University placed a program record three players on the 2014 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Division III All-South region teams. Senior catcher Casey Hicks (Henderson, Nev.) and senior outfielder William Bissell (Brewer, Maine) were selected to the second team while junior pitcher Brandon Holsworth (Beal City, Mich.) was picked to the third team. This is the fourth year in a row that a Bison was named to one of ABCA All-South region teams.
Hicks makes his first appearance on the ABCA All-South region team. He was recently a D3baseball.com All-South region first team honoree. The 2014 NEAC Baseball Player of the Year had a career season where he batted .401, 57 hits, 62 RBI, 38 runs, eight home runs, six doubles, six triples, 27 walks and 16 stolen bases in 42 games started. He earned the school's first National College Baseball Writers Association Division III National Hitter of the Week award on April 10 after being a two-time honorable mention honoree earlier in the season (March 6, March 13). He was a three-time NEAC Player of the Week this season (March 3, March 10, April 7) and a Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Upstate Player of the Week on April 8. He hit for the cycle in his first four at-bats back on March 1 and was a double shy of a second cycle a week later. In 13 different games Hicks had two or more RBI and in 13 consecutive games he had at least one RBI. He also hit five home runs in a seven-game stretch. He is second in NCAA Division III for RBI (62) and RBI per game (1.48), he is also in the Top 25 in the nation for triples (6), on base percentage (.519), home runs (8) and slugging percentage (.697). He led the NEAC in RBI, walks and second in triples, home runs, stolen bases, on base percentage, total chances (265) and slugging percentage (.697). Hicks was previously selected to the 2013 All-NEAC second team and 2012 All-NEAC first team.
This is Bissell's third appearance on the ABCA All-South team. He was a two-time first team honoree in 2011, '12. Bissell earned his second D3baseball.com All-South region honor when he was named to the second team after being named to the first team in 2012. Bissell is a three-time All-NEAC first team honoree (2011, '12, '14) and a two-time NEAC Player of the Year (2011, '12). He is ranked in the Top 10 in Division III for triples (7) and 16th for triples per game (0.18). Bissell led the NEAC in triples and was third in walks (25), RBI (41) and fourth in hits (59), total bases (85), runs (45), on base percentage (.481) and plate appearances (187). The senior outfielder ranks fifth in the conference in fielding percentage (.989), only had one error all season, and was fifth in batting average (.386) and home runs (3). He had two or more hits in 19 different games, had two or more RBI in 11 different games and pieced together a 13-game hitting streak during the season.
Holsworth makes his first appearance on the ABCA All-South region team. He just made his second straight appearance on the D3baseball.com All-South region team as a third team selection. The two-time NEAC Pitcher of the Year (2013, '14) has been an all-conference first team pitcher the past two seasons. This year, he was a two-time ECAC Division III Upstate Pitcher of the Week (April 8, April 15) and earned the NEAC Pitcher of the Week award four times (March 3, March 10, April 7, April 14). The right-hander is tied for first in Division III for games started (15), 13th for strikeouts (85) and 22nd for victories (8). He leads the NEAC in games started, wins, innings pitched (103.1) and strikeouts. Pitched back-to-back shutout wins over national powers Shenandoah University (March 2) and Christopher Newport University (March 9) this year.
Previous Gallaudet ABCA all-region honorees have include Bissell (2011, '12) on the first team, William Chapman (2012) on the third team and Tommy Barksdale (2013) on the second team.
Gallaudet faced five schools this past season that had a combined 14 players on one of the three All-South region teams including Christopher Newport University, Frostburg State University, Salisbury University, Shenandoah University and St. Mary's (Md.) College. The Bison trio are the only NEAC representatives on any of the All-South region teams.
