GANSEVOORT, N.Y. – The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) announced its student-athlete of the week awards for March 2 and Gallaudet University sophomore first baseman Justin Strong (Charlotte, N.C.) was chosen as the NEAC Baseball Player of the Week and senior Brandon Holsworth (Beal City, Mich.) was selected as the NEAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week.
Strong batted .400 in the Bison's season opener against Marymount (Va.) University last Wednesday at Hoy Field, going 2-for-5 at the plate with a single and a double while also scoring a run. Strong was also perfect in the field, converting all six of his chances to put outs in the contest, which the Bison lost 6-5 after a ninth-inning rally by the Saints.
Holsworth, the two-time NEAC Pitcher of the Year, put together a quality start in his debut this season, as he went six and two-thirds innings with seven strikeouts against Marymount (Va.) last Wednesday. The senior hurler left the mound with a 5-3 lead before the home Saints rallied for three runs in the ninth to win 6-5.
This marks the first NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week honors for the Bison this season. The honor is the seventh in Holsworth's career and the first for Strong.
Gallaudet will next host regional power Christopher Newport University on Friday, March 6, at 3:30 p.m.
