Bison fall in extra innings to Wells

AURORA, N.Y. - The Gallaudet University baseball team faced Wells College here Saturday afternoon in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader for the first time in program history. The Express (12-19, 3-9 NEAC) are making their debut this season.

The two teams needed extra innings in the first game but Gallaudet (9-28, 4-10 NEAC) fell 3-2 in nine innings. Wells won the second game, 6-2, in nine innings on its turf field.

Game 1: Wells 3, Gallaudet 2
The Bison and the Express battled hard and held each other scoreless through the regular seven innings.

After a scoreless eighth, the Bison were able to grab the lead when junior Dylan Hayes (Endicott, N.Y.), who led off with a triple, was able to tag up and score on sacrifice fly to right field by senior third baseman Zack Crawford (Newnan, Ga.). Sophomore shortstop Cameron Upton (Vicksburg, Miss.) scored GU's second run when he stole third and an errant throw by the Wells catcher allowed Upton to reach home.

GU was unable to hold the 2-0 lead in the bottom of the ninth. Hayes, Gallaudet's starting pitcher, surrendered two doubles, a walk and a Bison error allowed Wells to tie the game with no outs. Senior Ian Evans (Murphy, N.C.) relieved Hayes and got the first out and then intentionally walked a batter to load the bases. A.J. Nesci bunted, on a squeeze play, as the game-winning run scored from third.

Hayes (2-4) was nearly perfect through the first eight innings where he kept Wells scoreless. Wells starting pitcher Zach Kemp (4-3) pitched the complete game win as he allowed two runs on four hits, walked three and struck out seven Bison.

Game 2: Wells 6, Gallaudet 2
The Bison jumped out to a quick 2-1 lead after three innings played and held that margin until the bottom of the fifth inning.

Gallaudet committed back-to-back errors to extend the decisive fifth inning. The door was open for Wells, who scored five times and took a 6-2 lead. Dylan Nolan delivered the big blow with a three-run triple to right field off Upton (1-4).

Junior center fielder Kyle Gumm (Dallas, Texas) scored both of GU's runs as Hayes and Upton recorded a RBI.

Upton took the loss as he pitched 4.1 innings where he allowed six runs (three earned) on eight hits, walked two and struck out three.
