WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University baseball team wrapped up a 10-game homestand to begin the 2018 season at Hoy Field on an overcast and cold Tuesday afternoon. The Bison were shut out by McDaniel College, 17-0, in seven innings as the scheduled nine-inning non-conference game was called due to darkness.
Gallaudet (2-7-1) broke up McDaniel's no-hit bid in the sixth inning when junior pinch-hitter Ryan Gilbert (Mount Dora, Fla.) stepped to the plate. Gilbert worked a full count against Green Terror reliever Robbie Mays and then singled to center field. Gilbert's hit was the lone hit by Gallaudet in the game.
McDaniel (1-1) scored runs in the first six innings as it built up a double-digit lead.
McDaniel starting pitcher Brad Thaxton (1-0) took the win as he pitched four innings of no-hit ball as he issued three walks and struck out four.
Freshman pitcher Ethan Denson (Huffman, Texas) started on the mound for GU but his day was cut short in the third inning. Denson was lifted after logging 2.2 innings where he allowed eight runs (seven earned) on six hits, four walks and three strikeouts.
- Junior Cameron Upton (Vicksburg, Miss.) led the Bison with two walks
- McDaniel used 23 players in the game
- GU is 2-7-1 at Hoy Field this season
- The Bison played 10 home games in 17 days
GU will head south to Fort Myers, Fla., for its annual Spring Break trip. The Bison will play six games while in Florida between March 11-16. Gallaudet will begin its trip against Wilmington (Ohio) in a doubleheader on Sunday, March 11.
