GU football coach Ed Hottle steps down to take Stevenson post, interim coach named

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Gallaudet University Assistant Athletic Director and Football Coach Ed Hottle resigned from his position on Wednesday as he was named as the new head football coach for Stevenson University. Bison offensive coordinator Chuck Goldstein has been elevated to interim head coach as Gallaudet prepares to begin a search for its 36th head coach in the program's 116-year history.
"We intend to keep moving the football program along, upwards to new goals while not making drastic changes to the strong foundation already established here," said GU Athletics Director Michael Weinstock. "We have a strong group of student-athletes that just completed a fantastic season. Our future is bright!"
Hottle compiled a 27-20 record in five seasons at the helm at Gallaudet, tied for third all-time in school history for coaching wins. This year he led the Bison to a 6-4 record in the first season as a members of the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) where Gallaudet finished tied for second-place with a 4-2 mark. The winning overall record was the first against a varsity schedule since 1930. Hottle was selected by his peers as the 2009 ECFC Coach of the Year as the Bison earned 15 All-ECFC honors including the ECFC Rookie of the Year award. Hottle's first year at Gallaudet he led the Bison club team to a 9-0 record, which ranks fourth all-time in school history for wins in a season. In 2007, Hottle led GU back into NCAA Division III status as the team posted a 4-6 record against the toughest schedule the Bison had faced in 15 years. Hottle will be the first-ever football coach in Stevenson history, as the University will field its first varsity team in 2011.
"It is with mixed emotions that I announce my resignation from Gallaudet University. I want to thank President Robert Davila, Provost Steve Weiner, Dean Dwight Benedict and Athletic Director Michael Weinstock for all of their guidance and support over the years. Thanks to them, they gave me a chance to establish a strong foundation for the GU football program and help lead the Bison to new success over the past five seasons," said Hottle. "All of our accomplishments could not have been achieved without the strong dedication of the many student-athletes who have worn the Buff and Blue over the years along with my trusted coaching staff. I will truly miss Gallaudet and wish nothing but the best for the Bison in the future."
