WHITINGHAM, Vt. – The Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) named its players of the week for October 11 and Gallaudet University cornerback Tony Tatum (Gardendale, Ala.) took home two honors as he was selected as the Defensive and Rookie Player of the Week as he helped spark the Bison second half comeback on the road last Saturday in a 31-23 loss to Norwich University. Tatum becomes only the second player in the two-year history of the conference to earn two awards in one week. He is also the first-ever Rookie of the Week award winner for Gallaudet.
Tatum came up with two huge second half interceptions for Gallaudet (3-3, 1-2 ECFC) against the defending conference champion Norwich. Both of Tatum's interceptions took place in the third quarter in came near minutes apart from each other. Tatum first picked off Norwich quarterback Kris Sabourin at the Gallaudet 2-yard line, as the Cadets were on the verge of blowing open a 31-7 game. On the very next play Gallaudet threw a 98-yard touchdown pass to jump-start the Bison comeback. On the ensuing possession for the Cadets, Sabourin threw another errant pass to Tatum. This interception came two minutes after the previous one. Tatum made a return on the second pick and went 39 yards to the end zone as GU pulled to within one score, 31-23, heading into the fourth quarter. Tatum also had three tackles in the loss.
The other ECFC weekly honors for October 11 were awarded to Mount Ida junior running back Johrone Bunch (Offensive Player of the Week) and SUNY Maritime senior kicker Madison Leary (Special Teams Player of the Week). For Bunch it is his second consecutive player of the week award.
Tatum's two awards give the Bison three ECFC Player of the Week awards this year as senior kicker Justin Wilson (Carmichael, Calif.) earned Special Teams Player of the Week on October 4. Gallaudet has earned 11 ECFC Player of the Week awards total. SUNY Maritime freshman running back Thomas Davis became the first player in ECFC history to earn two player of the week awards in one week when he was named Rookie and Special Teams Player of the Week on September 13.
Gallaudet returns home to host Bunch and Mount Ida College for a conference game on Saturday, October 16, at Noon.
