WHITINGHAM, Vt. – The Gallaudet University football team was picked fifth in the 2010 Eastern Collegiate Football Conference preseason poll released by the conference on Wednesday. The Bison, who finished tied for second in the ECFC with a 4-2 conference record last year, received 39 points.
Norwich University, the defending ECFC champions, are the preseason favorites as the Cadets received seven of the eight first-place votes and tallied 63 total points to take the top spot. ECFC runner-up Mount Ida College checked in at No. 2 with 52 points and one first-place vote. SUNY Maritime (45 points) and Husson University (41 points), who finished with 3-3 conference records last season, were selected third and fourth, respectively. Gallaudet defeated both SUNY Maritime and Husson in 2009.
Castleton State College was ranked sixth in the preseason poll with 24 points while Becker College (14 points) and Anna Maria College (10 points) round out the top eight spots.
Gallaudet finished the 2009 season on a three-game winning streak and will place that mark on the line in its first game of 2010 on the road against Merchant Marine on Saturday, September 4, at 2 p.m.
