UPDATE (Fri., Oct. 1 - 2:00 a.m.) - The tip drill interception play is on ESPN's SportsCenter as the No. 2 play for its Top 10 plays of the day segment for Thursday.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Gallaudet University football tip drill interception video clip has been seen around the world, thanks to YouTube, and has taken on a life of its own. The viral video clip surpassed 1 million views on Thursday, September 30, in the early evening after it initially was uploaded to the popular video sharing website on Tuesday, September 28, in the morning.
The clip has been featured on numerous websites and is starting to be featured on television. The clip, which was edited and put together by Gallaudet football assistant coach John Davis, first surfaced on the Gallaudet athletics' Facebook and Twitter pages and then added to D3football.com. The video was picked up by Sports Illustrated and was featured as the Video of the Day on Jimmy Traina's Hot Clicks daily feature. The video was then featured on Versus's Daily Line television show on Tuesday night.
On Wednesday, September 29, the video clip got its big break when Gallaudet Sports Information Director Sam Atkinson contacted Matt Hinton at Yahoo Sports about the clip. Hinton added the clip and a story to his Dr. Saturday college football blog that has led to nearly 500,000 views alone. Later that evening, the clip was the lead story on Yahoo.com for several hours. Atkinson continued to push the clip to local and national websites, newspapers and television stations.
The Washington Post picked up the story on Thursday, September 30, in the morning as sports blogger Dan Steinberg featured the clip and wrote a story on the viral video. The story is slated to be in Friday's edition of The Post. The football office also received calls and e-mails from NBC and ESPN on Thursday about the clip.
YouTube had the clip ranked No. 1 for the day as the tip drill interception play continued to be viewed by hundreds of thousands of viewers who clicked on the clip to watch the 17-second highlight. Yahoo.com still has the story in its Top 40 news stories on its front page. There have also been hundreds of comments posted on YouTube and the Yahoo Sports blog about the play.
The video highlight shows Gallaudet breaking up a pass by Castleton State College in the third quarter of last Saturday's home game. Sophomore linebacker Tom Pangia (Hammonton, N.J.) got a hand on the ball initially to break-up the pass. The ball looks to be heading out of bounds but sophomore defensive back Tony Tatum (Gardendale, Ala.) leaps in the air, going out of bounds, and throws the ball back in bounds where fellow sophomore defensive back Shelby Bean (Arvada, Colo.) grabs the ball and returns it six yards to the Castleton 38-yard line.
