WHITTINGHAM, Vt. – The Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) named its players of the week for October 10 and Gallaudet University took home two honors, including the team's third Rookie of the Week recipient. Senior defensive lineman John Van Wey (Alexandria, Va.) was the conference Defensive Player of the Week, and freshman Jaris Alleyne (Waldorf, Md.) was named Rookie of the Week. The duo was key players in GU's 35-0 rout of Husson University (0-5, 0-2 NEAC) on Saturday.
Van Wey was consistently in the Husson backfield on Saturday as he terrorized the Eagles and their quarterback. He led the Bison (3-2, 2-0) with two sacks for a loss of 26 yards, had four quarterback hurries, led the team with 32 yards lost on 3.5 tackles, and even scored a touchdown. Van Wey scooped up a fumble, off a Bison sack by sophomore Matt Harris (Lynchburg, Va.), and ran 41 yards for the touchdown to start the fourth quarter and put the game out of reach. The Bison defense held Husson to negative 47 yards rushing in the game.
Alleyne stopped Husson's second longest drive of the day with an interception just outside the red zone as he came down with the pass at the Gallaudet 22-yard line and raced eight yards to stop a 7-play, 40-yard drive late in the third quarter. The freshman linebacker made four tackles, one tackle for a loss of a yard, in the GU win.
This brings the Bison's ECFC weekly award total to seven this season, including three rookie of the week honors, as freshman Quentin Williams (Chesapeake, Va.) won for his September 9 performance against Catholic University of America and shared co-rookie of the week honors for his play against Anna Maria College on October 1.
Mount Ida College quarterback Scott Drosendahl was named Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in their 56-7 victory over Anna Maria, where he scored three touchdowns passing and two rushing. SUNY Maritime kicker/punter Madison Leary repeated as Special Teams Player of the Week for his outstanding day both kicking and punting in their 47-19 win over Becker College.
Gallaudet will next travel to Norwich University (3-3, 3-0) on Saturday, October 15, at 1 p.m. in a key ECFC matchup.
