Matt Harris named ECFC Defensive Player of the Week, Williams tabbed as Rookie of the Week again
WHITTINGHAM, Vt. – The Gallaudet University football team continues to pile up Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) awards as the Bison took home two more ECFC weekly honors on Monday. Sophomore linebacker Matt Harris (Lynchburg, Va.) was named Defensive Player of the Week and freshman Quentin Williams (Chesapeake, Va.) was named Rookie of the Week for a third time this season.
Harris set a Gallaudet program record with his seven-sack performance against Becker College as the Bison won 44-20 on Homecoming before a season-high crowd of 3,854 at Hotchkiss Field. Harris sacked Becker quarterback Robert Baker seven times for a loss of 49 yards to set the single-game sack record for the Bison. He finished the game with eight tackles.
Williams made his first collegiate start at quarterback for GU on Saturday and did not disappoint as he ran for two touchdowns and threw for a third score. Williams ran the ball 25 times for a career-high 138 yards (5.5 yards per carry) and scored two touchdowns. He scored on a 55-yard run, a career best, in the second half to help secure the win for the Bison. He completed 3-of-10 passes for 59 yards and one touchdown on a 27-yard pass while being picked off twice and sacked only once.
This week's two awards bring the Bison to a total of nine ECFC weekly honorees, including players who have won Offensive, Defensive, and Special Teams Player of the Week, as well as Rookie of the Week. Three of those honors belong Williams, as this is his third ECFC Rookie of the Week selection in just six games played.
SUNY Maritime fullback Jamie Spanopoulos was named Offensive Player of the Week for his 25-rush, 127-yard performance that included two scores against Mount Ida. Also from Maritime, Special Teams Player of the Week was kick returner Greg Caneparo. Caneparo returned six kicks for 127 yards (24.8 yards per return) including a 59-yard and a 43-yard return.
The Bison will head to Vermont to face conference foe Castleton State College on Saturday, October 29, at noon.
