WHITTINGHAM, Vt. – For the second straight year the Gallaudet University football team was selected fifth in the preseason conference coaches poll released by the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) on Tuesday. The Bison, who finished with a 3-4 conference record last year, received 33 points.
SUNY Maritime (N.Y.), the defending ECFC champions, is the preseason favorite alongside 2009 ECFC champion Norwich University. The two schools tied with 55 points while Maritime received five of the eight first-place votes compared to one for the Cadets. The Privateers finished with a perfect 7-0 conference record last year and finished the regular-season with a 10-0 mark. Norwich finished last year with an 8-3 overall record and was one of three teams to post 5-2 conference records. The Cadets also received an invitation to an ECAC postseason bowl.
Mount Ida College received two first-place votes and 51 points as the Mustangs are coming off an ECAC bowl berth and a 5-2 record in the ECFC. Castleton State College is fourth as the Spartans tallied 36 points after going 5-2 in the conference.
Gallaudet edged out Husson University, who garnered 32 points, as the Eagles were ranked sixth followed by Becker College (14 points) and Anna Maria College (12 points) round out the poll.
