MINNEAPOLIS - The Gallaudet University football team is garnering national media attention due to its impressive start to the 2012 football season. The 3-1 Bison are featured as the headline story and the lead in this week's D3football.com Around the Region article for the Northeast Region.
D3football.com is the nation's definitive source for NCAA Division III football news and scores and uses reporters from across the country to cover various regions. Tom Haley, who is a sportswriter for the Rutland Herald (Vt.), is the Northeast Region reporter for D3football.com.
In the article, Haley says that Gallaudet has the ability to flip the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference upside down by challenging for the league title this season. Last year, Norwich and Maritime (N.Y.) finished first and second in the league, respectively, but both squads have lost their conference openers this season. The Bison, who finished fourth in the ECFC last season, currently sits atop the conference standings after easily disposing of Anna Maria, 52-24, this past Saturday. They previously beat Catholic and Apprentice by wide margins (20+ points) as the Bison average 33.5 points per game.
Gallaudet is nationally ranked in several key NCAA Division III football statistic rankings. The Bison are first in the nation in punt returns (28.14 yards per return), 21st in pass defense (137 yards per game), 26th in pass efficiency defense (96.05 yards per game) and 29th in rushing offense (236.25 yards per game). In the ECFC rankings Gallaudet is first or second in 12 different categories.
The Bison will look to continue their winning ways on the road in Bangor, Maine, this Saturday, Oct. 6, at noon against Husson University in a conference game.
