WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) named its players of the week for Nov. 12 and Gallaudet University senior Tony Tatum (Gardendale, Ala.) received Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors. The award is the cornerback's third award of the season and comes on the heels of yet another dominant performance in the Bison secondary in the team's 21-0 shutout victory over Maritime (N.Y.). Tatum was named Special Teams Player of the Week on Sept. 24 and Oct. 15.
With 5:23 remaining in the first half and the Privateers threatening to erase a 7-0 deficit, Maritime quarterback dropped back to pass on a third-and-long situation deep in Bison territory. Tatum stepped in front of the pass, however, and returned it 80 yards the other way to extend the Bison's lead to 14-0. The interception was Tatum's sixth of the season, which leads the ECFC this season. Tatum also broke up two passes in the game.
Maritime (N.Y.) linebacker Keith Barnes was also named ECFC Co-Defensive Player of the Week as he led all players with a season and career-high 20 tackles in the team's 21-0 loss to GU on Saturday. Santino Simone, quarterback for Anna Maria College, won Offensive Player of the Week honors on the strength of his 349-yard passing performance with four touchdowns in the AMCATS' stunning 44-42 triple overtime victory over Husson. Rookie of the Week honors went to Simone's teammate, wide receiver Donald Graham, for hauling in the game-tying touchdown in the first overtime and the game-winning two-point conversion in the third overtime. The receptions were just the second and third of the freshman's young career thus far.
Tatum's award brings the Bison's season total to 11 ECFC Player of the Week awards on the season. Freshman quarterback Todd Bonheyo (Frederick, Md.) has been named the conference rookie of the week on three different occasions (Oct. 1, 8, 22) while freshman running back BJ Flores (Raymondville, Texas) has earned two Rookie of the Week awards (Sept. 10, Nov. 5), senior defensive lineman Jared Pearce (Reno, Nev.) was honored on Sept. 24, junior defensive lineman Adham Talaat (Springfield, Va.) on Oct. 29 as Defensive Players of the Week and junior Nick Elstad (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was picked on Oct. 1 as Special Teams Player of the Week.
Gallaudet was not selected for an ECAC Bowl game and finish the 2012 season with a 7-3 record and 5-2 mark in the conference. The seven wins are the most by a Bison team since the program returned to NCAA Division III status in 2007. The five conference wins is a new program high since GU joined the ECFC in the conference's first year in 2009.
