Gallaudet earns two more ECFC Player of the Week awards
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) named its players of the week for Oct. 1 and two Gallaudet University players were recognized for their outstanding performances. Freshman quarterback Todd Bonheyo (Frederick, Md.) was named Co-Rookie of the Week while junior running back Nick Elstad (Colorado Springs, Colo.) earned Special Teams Player of the Week for their contributions in the Bison's 52-24 victory over Anna Maria College last Saturday.
Bonheyo accounted for 278 yards of offense and four touchdowns as the team cruised past Anna Maria in the conference opener. The Bison's triple-option offense confused the AMCATS (1-3, 0-1 ECFC) all afternoon and Bonheyo was able to score on touchdown runs of 17 and 59 yards, respectively, as he racked up 169 rushing yards. While the majority of his damage came on the ground, he was able to hookup with senior wide receivers Kevin Berrigan (Frederick, Md.) and Ryne Worsham (Chicago, Ill.) for first half touchdown passes as he threw for 109 yards through the air. GU has won three straight games and has outscored its opponents 134-58. The ECFC Rookie of the Week award is the first for Bonheyo as he shares the honor with Mount Ida freshman strong safety Trevor Terrell.
It wasn't just an offensive display for the Bison (3-1, 1-0 ECFC) against Anna Maria as special teams added three touchdowns of their own. After a second quarter field goal by the AMCATS, it was time for Elstad to shine. On the ensuing kick-off, Elstad fielded the punt from the Gallaudet 12 and broke out to the near sideline and raced 88 yards to the end zone. Later in the third quarter, with the Bison lined up for a field goal, Elstad took a direct snap and raced 20 yards into the end zone for his second special teams touchdown of the day.
Becker College junior quarterback Robert Baker was named ECFC Offensive Player of the Week while SUNY Maritime sophomore defensive end Nick Coffiey was picked as ECFC Defensive Player of the Week.
The two awards ups Gallaudet's total to five conference honors this season as senior defensive end Jared Pearce (Reno, Nev.) and senior cornerback Tony Tatum (Gardendale, Ala.) were honored on Sept. 24 while freshman running back BJ Flores (Raymondville, Texas) was picked on Sept. 10.
The high-powered Bison go on the road this week to take on Husson University (1-3, 0-1 ECFC) on Saturday, Oct. 6, at noon before returning home on Saturday, Oct. 13, at noon to take on defending ECFC champs Norwich University (3-1, 0-1 ECFC) at Hotchkiss Field.
