WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) named its players of the week for Oct. 22 and Gallaudet University snatched up two of the four possible awards. Freshman quarterback Todd Bonheyo (Frederick, Md.) and junior defensive lineman Adham Talaat (Springfield, Va.) earned Rookie and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, on the heels of the Bison's 48-26 triumph over ECFC foe Becker College.
Bonheyo, who has now been named ECFC Rookie of the Week three times, once again confounded the opposing defense with the Bison's prolific triple-option offense. The freshman sensation rushed for 88 yards and three touchdowns while passing for 104 yards. He also added another touchdown through the air as he hooked up with senior wide receiver Ryne Worsham (Chicago, Ill.) for a 12-yard score in the third quarter. After a slow start to the season with a 15-0 loss to out of conference opponent Otterbein University, Bonheyo has accumulated 21 touchdowns against just six turnovers over his past six games.
Shane Brozowski of Castleton State College earned Offensive Player of the Week honors as he was unstoppable in the Spartans 54-33 victory over Anna Maria College last Saturday. The senior quarterback finished with 403 yards and five touchdowns and no interceptions. Mount Ida senior kicker Bobby Hemman took home the Special Teams Player of the Week award as he connected on a 38-yard field goal with four seconds remaining to lift the Mustangs to a thrilling 24-21 win over conference rivals SUNY Maritime.
The Bison defense will look to slow down Brozowski and the high-flying Castleton attack on Saturday, Oct. 27, as GU welcomes the Spartans to Hotchkiss Field during homecoming weekend. The matchup between two of the top teams in the ECFC kicks off Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. as the Bison attempt to win their second straight game over the Spartans.
