Gallaudet's Elstad, Magsig snag ECFC Player of the Week honors

WASHINGTON – The Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) announced its weekly honors for the week of Sept. 16 and two Gallaudet Bison were recognized for their outstanding performances. Senior defensive back and co-captain Nicholas Elstad (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and sophomore kicker Chase Magsig (Hudsonville, Mich.) were awarded Defensive Player of the Week and Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively, as they helped the Bison win, 38-14, over Apprentice School. This is the first award for either player this season and also the first awards for the team this season.

Elstad had a hand in three of the six turnovers the Bison defense caused in their home opening win last Saturday. Elstad made two interceptions and recovered a fumble and returned it 44 yards. Two of his turnovers turned into 10 points for the Bison as they won their second consecutive home opener. This is Elstad's second career ECFC Player of the Week award. He was named the ECFC Special Teams Player of the Week last season (Oct. 1, 2012).

Magsig had a perfect day kicking for Gallaudet as the sophomore kicker made 5-of-5 point after attempts and nailed a 28-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. He also booted three punts for 90 yards (with a long of 33 yards). He had seven kick-off attempts that traveled 350 yards (50 yards per kick average) in the win. In addition, he made two tackles on special teams for the Bison. Magsig is 9-for-9 in point after attempts on the season and 2-for-3 on field goal attempts (67 percent). He has contributed 15 points towards the Bison's 2-0 record.

Anna Maria College running back Robert Small was named ECFC Offensive Player of the Week as he scored five touchdowns as the AMCats upset Maine Maritim College. SUNY Maritime freshman defensive back Francis Gannon was selected as the ECFC Rookie of the Week after a two interception performance.

The Bison hope to maintain an undefeated record on Saturday, Sept. 21, as they take on Rochester (N.Y.) University (1-0) in their last non-conference game of the season. Kickoff is set for 12:05 p.m. at Hotchkiss Field.
