WASHINGTON – The Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) named its players of the week for Oct. 28 and Gallaudet University sophomore kicker/punter Chase Magsig (Hudsonville, Mich.) received Special Teams Player of the Week honors. This is the second time this season Magsig has earned the award.
Magsig had a career day kicking the ball for undefeated Gallaudet (7-0, 4-0 ECFC) as the sophomore booted home the game-winning field goal, 26 yards, with 3:09 left in regulation as GU won, 16-13, over Husson University before 3,023 at Hotchkiss Field on homecoming. Magsig punted six times, recorded 249 punting yards, had a long of 66 yards, had two touchbacks, two 50+ punts (the other punt went for 56 yards) and two inside the 20-yard line. All of those punting numbers are new career-highs for the sophomore kicker. Magsig's 66-yard and 56-yard punts occurred on back-to-back possessions in the fourth quarter for the Bison and helped to flip the field in Gallaudet's favor. Husson threw back-to-back interceptions on those possessions after Magsig's long punts. He also had a season best kicking the ball off as he averaged 57.5 yards per kick-off. He was 1-for-2 on his point after attempts.
Magsig has accumulated 820 yards off of 22 punts this season, averaging 35.7 yards per punt. He has recorded 2,068 kickoff yards, averaging 54.4 yards per kickoff. Magsig has converted five field goals on eight attempts contributing to the Bison's 7-0 record. Magsig was named ECFC Special Teams Player of the Week back on Sept. 16.
Freshman quarterback Ryan Heizman of Maritime (N.Y.) took home the Offensive Player of the Week award after rushing for 210 yards and scoring three touchdowns in the Privateers' 38-6 victory over Castleton State College. Teammate Nick Coffiey was awarded Defensive Player of the Week after registering 14 tackles, including a sack. He also had a fumble recovery and an interception in the win. Freshman D'Andre Smith of Mount Ida College was named Rookie of the Week after a standout day on special teams and defense blocking three kicks and pitching in five tackles and a fumble recovery in the Mustangs 36-25 win over Becker College.
The Bison will travel to Leicester, Mass., to compete against conference foe Becker College on Saturday, Nov. 2, at noon.
