GENEVA, N.Y. – The Gallaudet University football team will depart for Geneva, N.Y., early Friday morning. The Bison are off to the 2013 NCAA Division III football championships where they will a play a first round game against No. 7 Hobart College on Saturday, Nov. 23, at noon on Boswell Field.
This is the first time in school history that a Gallaudet men's team has reached the postseason and earned a bid to the NCAA tournament. Gallaudet (9-1) won its first-ever Eastern Collegiate Football Conference title after it went 6-1 in league play. The Bison and Norwich tied for first place but GU held the tiebreaker after a 30-22 win over the Cadets on Oct. 12. The Bison won their first nine games of the season and had an 11-game winning streak, dating back to last season, before they lost, 7-6, last Saturday at SUNY Maritime.
Hobart (9-0) is one of the top seeds in the region after it received an automatic qualifier bid into the tournament. The Statesmen won their third consecutive Liberty League championship. Hobart finished the regular season with a 9-0 record, the program's second straight undefeated regular season. The Statesmen are making their third consecutive and eighth overall NCAA playoff appearance. Hobart is 6-7 all-time in NCAA play, reaching the quarterfinal round for the first time in 2012.
There is one common opponent between Gallaudet and Hobart this season, the University of Rochester. The Bison beat the Yellowjackets at home, 37-13, on Sept. 21, while the Statesmen closed out their regular season with a 42-21 victory over Rochester this past Saturday.
This will be the first meeting ever between the two teams on the football field. The winner of the Gallaudet and Hobart match will face the winner of the first round match between the No. 11 John Carroll Blue Streaks and St. John Fisher Cardinals on Saturday, Nov. 30, at noon.
Gallaudet and our friends at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf are welcoming all Bison supporters to join them in a pre-game tailgate taking place in the Odell parking lot starting at 10 a.m.
All tickets for the game are general admission and will be sold an hour and a half before kickoff at 10:30 a.m. Tickets will cost $4 for students with valid ID and $8 for adults. Children 2 and under are free, as long as they don't take up a seat. There are no complimentary tickets available due to NCAA rules.
