McConville, Santiago highlight Gallaudet's ECFC All-Academic team selections

WASHINGTON – The Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) announced it's sixth annual All-Academic honorees and Gallaudet University earned four of the 61 total selections.

Gallaudet seniors Nico Santiago (Moorestown, N.J.) and Gregg McConville (Frederick, Md.) were each selected for their third consecutive year to the ECFC All-Academic team. Junior Sean Maiwald (San Jose, Calif.) made his second consecutive appearance on the team, while sophomore Sean Fenton (Chicago, Ill.) received his first selection to the All-Academic team. To be honored, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore academic standing, have participated a minimum of two years with the team and achieved a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30.

The ECFC includes eight teams, all of whom were represented on the 61-player team. Four teams had selections in double digits, including a three-way lead between Castleton State College, Husson University and Norwich University, who each had 13 players selected to the All-Academic team.

This is Santiago and McConville's third consecutive year on the ECFC All-Academic team, and have joined the exclusive group of only five players from GU to be named to three straight ECFC All-Ccademic teams. Last year, Adham Talaat (2013) joined alums Caleb Hinton (2011) and Denton Mallas (2012) in earning this elite honor.

Santiago is a 2014 National Football Foundation (NFF) National Scholar-Athlete Candidate, as well as a 2014 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District First Team (District 2) honoree. As linebackers, Santiago recorded 89 total tackles (56 solo, 33 assist) in four years while McConville recorded 202 total tackles (118 solo, 84 assist) in his four seasons with the Bison. McConville led the team in tackles (94) during his junior season in 2013.

Gallaudet had eight all academic honorees last year in the ECFC's fifth year, as well as eight in 2012, nine in 2011, five in 2010 and two in 2009. GU's total now stands at 36 in six years.
