MARSHFIELD, Mass. - The Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) announced its weekly honors for the week of Sept. 19 and for the third week in a row Gallaudet University took home Rookie of the Week honors. Freshman running back Spencer Maples (Kempner, Texas) was selected as Rookie of the Week for the second week in a row.
Maples led the Bison offense with 179 yards of all-purpose yardage as Gallaudet lost 21-6 at Greensboro College last Saturday. Maples led GU with 57 receiving yards on three catches, fielded three kickoffs and returned them 55 yards (18 yards per return) and was third on the team in rushing with 67 yards on eight carries (8.4 yards per carry). He scored Gallaudet's lone touchdown on an 11-yard run in the second quarter. His longest rush got Gallaudet into the red zone for the first time during the game. Maples returned Greensboro's first kickoff in the third quarter 32 yards. He caught a 22-yard pass in the fourth quarter, his longest reception in the game.
Husson University junior running back John Smith was named Offensive Player of the Week after he rushed for 280 yards in a 43-23 win over Dean College. Norwich University senior Tyler Bates was selected as Defensive Player of the Week after he a six-tackle performance that included a sack that resulted in a safety and a 30-yard interception return against WPI. SUNY Maritime junior kicker Matthew Murphy was picked as Special Teams Player of the Week as he made two field goals (26 and 32 yards) along with two extra-points to help propel the Privateers to victory over Merchant Marine, 20-16.
This is Gallaudet's fifth ECFC honor of the 2016 season and the third straight week the Bison have received a honor.
