Bison come up short against No. 17 St. Mary's

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The Gallaudet University men's basketball team had a tough task on Saturday afternoon as the Bison faced nationally ranked St. Mary's (Md.) College in a Capital Athletic Conference game at the ARC Arena. Gallaudet led No. 17 St. Mary's for the first few minutes before the Seahawks kicked things into gear and flew past the Bison in a 83-52 rout.
Senior guard Johnny Jackson (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) converted a three-point play for the Bison at the 17:54 mark in the first half to give the Bison (4-9, 0-7 CAC) an early 5-0 lead. Over the course of the next eight minutes the Seahawks (13-2, 6-1 CAC) went on a 20-2 run and never looked back. GU went into halftime down 15, 36-21 to St. Mary's.
The second half was much of the same as the Bison shot 36.1 percent from the field (13-for-38) compared to the 45.5 percent mark the Seahawks completed on 15-of-33 shots. SMC scored 35 points off 31 Bison turnovers in the game. Gallaudet held a 44-38 advantage on rebounds against the Seahawks.
Sophomore guard Tony Tatum (Birmingham, Ala.) scored a team-high 10 points while freshman Danny Kelly (Strongsville, Ohio) ripped down a game-high 14 rebounds to go with six points. Jackson and sophomore Brandon McMillan (Frederick, Md.) finished with nine points apiece. Jackson made a team-high four steals.
St. Mary's had three players reach double figures led by Camontae Griffin who scored a game-high 21 points to go with seven steals.
The Bison will try and secure their first conference win on Wednesday, January 20, when Gallaudet welcomes Wesley College to the Field House for an 8 p.m. game.
