WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University men's basketball team led No. 12 St. Mary's (Md.) College for most of the first half, in a non-conference match-up Wednesday night, but in the end fell 63-47 in front of a home crowd of 300.
Gallaudet (9-11) entered the halftime only down eight points, 32-24, thanks to senior guard Layton Seeber's (Champaign, Ill.) 15 points and junior forward Orion Palmer's (Riverside, Calif.) five rebounds. GU led by as much as nine points, 17-8, midway through the opening half of play. St. Mary's (17-2) held onto its lead in the second half as the Seahawks outscored the Bison, 31-23, en route to victory.
The Bison tried to cut into the SMC lead in the second half. GU was able to whittle down the lead to three points, 34-31, with 13:47 left to play as Seeber made two free throws. Gallaudet's shooting percentage dipped in the final 20 minutes of play as the Bison made 36.8 percent of their shots while St. Mary's made 44.8 percent from the field. Gallaudet struggled again with turnovers as it committed 26 that led to 25 points for St. Mary's.
Seeber led all scorers with 24 points as he made 7-of-14 shots, including six 3-pointers, five rebounds, one block and one steal. Danny Kelly (Strongsville, Ohio) was the next leading scorer for the Bison with nine points, seven rebounds and one steal. Palmer finished with four points, nine rebounds, four assists, one block and one steal.
Brendan McFall led the Seahawks on offense with 15 points, three assists, seven rebounds and one steal as St. Mary's had three players in double figures.
Gallaudet will take on North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) for Penn St.-Abington (6-12, 4-3 NEAC South) at home on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m.
