Gallaudet basketball teams give back with reading days at Kendall Demonstration Elementary School

WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University men's and women's basketball teams volunteered during the month of January at the Kendall Demonstration Elementary School (KDES) reading to a variety of children including three to four year olds, first and second graders, as well as pre-kindergarteners on Jan. 10 and 17.

In groups of two the players read The Mitten by Jan Brett, The Napping House by Audrey Wood, Turtle's Race with Beaver, How Chipmunk Got His Stripes by Joseph and James Bruchac, and Five Little Penguin Slipping on the Ice by Steve Metzger.

Players that participated in this program on Jan. 17 include seniors Stephanie Weiss (Wellington, Fla.), Lindsay Stergio (Montville, Conn.), Britny Latham (Cleveland, Tenn.), juniors Elena Ciccarelli (Whitesboro, N.Y.), Leslye Kang (Wayne, N.J.), Lane Peters (Phoenix, Ariz.), Danielle Warren (San Jose, Calif.), Ben Coleman (St. Paris, Ohio) and freshmen Jazzmin Washington (Orlando, Fla.) and Joshua McGriff (Somerset, N.J.).

"This activity made us feel special and appreciated, and we would definitely do this experience again" said Weiss, who read How the Chipmunk Got his Stripes to first and second graders along with McGriff. "Keeping the students entertained and seeing their smiles on their faces, when they had a clear understanding or when something was funny, was literally the best part of the activity."
