YORK, Pa. - The Gallaudet University men's basketball team traveled to Pennsylvania on Saturday for its first game of the season against non-conference rival York (Pa.) College. The Bison fell to the Spartans 81-61. The game is the first of two for the Bison in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic hosted by York.
The Bison (0-1) had a slow start as the Spartans (1-0) went on a 13-point run in the first half of the game followed by a nine-point run, three and a half minutes later, leading up to halftime where the Spartans had a 23-point lead. Although Bison came out strong in the second half outscoring York 37-34, it was not enough to overcome the first half deficit as GU lost by 20 points.
The Bison were led by freshman forward Joshua McGriff (Somerset, N.J.) who recorded his first double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds. He also had a game-high five blocks. Junior guard Anton Jackson (Detroit, Mich.) and freshman guard Stephen Dean (Sacramento, Calif.) pitched in 13 points and four rebounds and 12 points and five rebounds, respectively. Sophomore guard Trey Gordon (Talladega, Ala.) came off the bench and scored 16 points.
The Spartan offense was led by Dalton Myers' game-high of 18 points as he shot 9-of-13 from the field. He was accompanied by Mike Matthews and Matt McNeely (11 rebounds), who both had 15 points in the win.
The Bison will play Stevens Institute of Technology at 1 p.m. in the consolation game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.
