WASHINGTON – Alfred University made 13 three-pointers en route to a 20-point win, 68-48, over the Bison men's basketball team Saturday as the Saxons claimed the GU Holiday Tournament championship at the Field House.
Gallaudet (4-2) held a 15-9 lead midway through the first half before Alfred went on a 24-5 run to close out the first half up 33-20. The Saxons (6-1) did a lot of damage from 3-point range as they made 7 of 19 shots in the first 20 minutes of play.
In the second half, Alfred's lead increased to 31 points, 56-25, before the Bison chipped away at the margin. GU got as close as 65-48 before losing by 20.
Junior Trey Gordon (Talladega, Ala.) and sophomore Joshua McGriff (Somerset, N.J.) were Gallaudet's representatives on the all-tournament team. Gordon finished the game with a team-high 16 points, four rebounds and two steals while McGriff recorded 10 points, five rebounds and a vicious one-handed dunk early in the game to electrify the crowd.
Tyler Seelman led the Saxons (6-1) with 30 points as he made 8 of 19 shots from 3-point range to earn tournament most valuable player. Dalton Walsh (13 points, nine rebounds) and Julian Reinhart (six points, six rebounds) joined Seelman on the all-tournament team representing Alfred.
The Bison outscored the Saxons in the paint, 28-16, and both teams scored 21 points off turnovers in a game that had five lead changes. The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for the Bison.
Maryland Bible defeated University of Valley Forge by four, 73-69, in the consolation game earlier in the day.
Gallaudet will close out the fall semester with a home non-conference game with Goucher College (1-6) on Saturday, Dec. 13, at noon.
