Gallaudet no match against No. 11 Salisbury

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Gallaudet University men's soccer team faced a tough task on Wednesday afternoon in its home and Capital Athletic Conference opener against nationally ranked Salisbury University. The Sea Gulls, ranked No. 11 in the nation, are the two-time defending CAC champions and have dominated the series against Gallaudet since SU joined the conference in 1994. On this day the result was the same as SU won 10-0 to give the Bison their fifth straight shutout loss.

Salisbury (6-0-0, 1-0-0 CAC) raced out a 5-0 lead eight minutes into the contest as All-American midfielder Kyle Sterling netted two goals, a game-high. The deep Sea Gull squad emptied its bench midway through the half and took a 7-0 lead into halftime. SU outshot Gallaudet 25-0.

A highlight for the Bison (0-6-0, 0-1-0 CAC) came at the 35th minute when GU sophomore goalie Poloko Qobose (Gaborone, Botswana) made a save on a penalty kick taken by Salisbury's Nate Woods. Qobose ended the game with 14 saves.

In the second half, the Gallaudet streak of games without a shot ended when junior defender Sean Ryant (Cleveland, Ohio) took a direct kick from 30 yards out and placed it on goal but SU goalie John Vnenchak made the save. The shot ended the GU streak of 250 minutes without a shot, a streak that spanned four games. The Bison added a second shot 30 minutes later when defender Hayden Teesdale (Auckland, New Zealand) made a shot on goal but Sea Gull goalie Steven Evans made the save. Salisbury has only allowed one goal in six games (540 minutes) this season.

Salisbury played a respectable second half as the Sea Gulls played all 27 players that dressed and four different goalies in the contest. SU scored three goals in the second half en route to the 10-goal win. The Sea Gulls outshot the Bison 43-2 and took 10 corner kicks in the game.

The Bison will look to crack into the win column on Saturday afternoon as GU hosts Christendom College at 2 p.m. The two teams met a week ago as the Crusaders won 6-0 at Sherando Park in Front Royal, Va.
