GU defense plays strong first half, Noschese nets third goal of season

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The first half of Friday's men's soccer game between Gallaudet University and Southern Virginia University may have looked one-sided as the visiting Knights had possession of the ball the majority of the time but after 45 minutes the score was the same, 0-0. The Bison defense held their own as SVU launched 25 shots and sophomore goalie Poloko Qobose (Gaborone, Botswana) made nearly a dozen saves.

The second half was a different story as the Knights scored two goals, within six seconds of each other, just a minute and a half in to take a 2-0 lead. SVU (4-3-0) tacked on two more goals before the Bison (0-10-0) added one goal in the 4-1 loss.

Junior forward Zane Noschese (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored his third goal of the season at the 85th minute when he lifted the ball over SVU goalie Michael Wilson (four saves), found the back of the net. Noschese has scored all of Gallaudet's goals this season. The Bison were held without a shot until late in the game when the Buff and Blue got five shots off. Freshman defender Hayden Teesdale (Auckland, New Zealand) came off the bench to record two shots.

The Bison defense of freshman Ethan White (Oklahoma City, Okla.) and juniors Pantong Dashwet (Jos, Nigeria), Sean Ryant (Cleveland, Ohio) and Brandon Wineberger (Crawford, Tenn.) played great in front of Qobose. As a team GU had three team saves. Qobose finished the game with 13 saves.

Gallaudet was still in the game at the half. The Bison had hoped this would be the day the team would record a win since the 2006 season. In fact, the last time Gallaudet won a game it came against Southern Virginia University at home on October 21, 2006 in a 1-0 game. Since then the Bison have dropped 45 consecutive games.

Francisco Osegueda led the Knights, a NAIA program, with two goals and one assist. SVU outshot GU 41-5 and took 12 corner kicks. SVU's two goals in six seconds is a second more then the NCAA Division III record for fastest consecutive goals by the same team, which was set by Rose-Hulman in 2002.

The Bison hit the road for the next three weeks for a five-game road trip. Gallaudet will face York (Pa.) College on Wednesday, September 30, at 4:30 p.m. in a Capital Athletic Conference game.
