TAKOMA PARK, Md. - The Gallaudet University men's soccer team scored a season-high two goals in a 9-2 loss to Washington Adventist University on the road Friday afternoon.
Gallaudet (0-12) nearly doubled its season goal total in the second half of play against Washington Adventist (5-7), formerly known as Columbia Union. Two new faces found the back of the net as freshman Richard Spiecker (Rochester, N.Y.) and junior Aldo Cornejo (Peru, Lima) scored unassisted goals, their first tallies of the season.
GU fell behind early as WAU's Se-Eun Park (three goals, one assist) and Kouame Kreme (two goals, one assist) scored two goals apiece in the first 25 minutes of play. WAU tacked on two more goals before halftime as it led 6-0.
Four minutes into the second half, Spiecker got the Bison on the scoreboard with a shot that beat WAU goalie Akinola Awojope (four saves). The goal ended Gallaudet's recent scoreless streak of 145 minutes. WAU quickly answered on the re-start as Edward Kamarah scored an unassisted goal, in 14 seconds, to give WAU the 7-1 lead. After an eighth WAU goal the Bison scored a second time as Cornejo struck in the 81st minute. Park added his third goal in the 86th minute as WAU cruised to the seven-goal win.
Sophomore goalie Poloko Qobose (Gaborone, Botswana) made 13 saves for the Bison. Gallaudet had a season-high 17 shots in the game, 10 in the second half. Spiecker led the way with five shots, three on goal, including one goal. WAU fired off 40 shots and took 10 corner kicks.
